Several awards were announced prior to the festival: Plot for Peace won the 2013 Brizzolara Family Foundation Award for a Film of Conflict and Resolution, The Square won The Victor Rabinowitz and Joanne Grant award for social justice, Emptying the Skies won the Zelda Penzel Giving Voice to the Voiceless Award, presented to a film that raises awareness of social issues, and Decoding Annie Parkerwon the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.
